Sparking skilled trade success at NII Advance Technology Campus

With thousands of welders needed in diverse roles across the country, 20 newly certified welding students in the Clean Energy Frontier region are on the pathway to their apprenticeships, thanks to a collaborative training program hosted recently at the NII Advance Technology Campus.

The Saugeen Sparks Training Centre, in collaboration with the CWB Welding Foundation (CWB), wrapped up an inspiring week-long Mind Over Metal™ workshop, sharpening students’ skills under the expert guidance of both the CWB Foundation's instructors and the Saugeen Sparks’ lead welding instructor.

The workshop concluded with rigorous testing for the CWB-W47.1 flat and horizontal fillet weld qualifications using the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) process.

And we're excited to share that all twenty participants passed with flying colours! Among them, 18 individuals earned their flat and horizontal fillet weld qualifications, while two students also achieved their vertical and overhead welding certifications using the SMAW process.

“Achieving a 100% pass rate is a remarkable feat that speaks volumes about the quality of instruction and the dedication of our participants,” said Rob Stanley, Executive Director of the Saugeen Sparks Training Centre.

He added: “This success is a testament to the hard work and commitment of everyone involved, from our engaged instructors to the motivated students who poured their energy into mastering these welding skills.”

Future-ready skilled trades students

This week, 16 students—including 11 graduates from the previously mentioned program—are participating in a four-week intensive training program organized by the Provincial Building and Construction Trades Council of Ontario – Tomorrow’s Trades.

In addition to skills for their vertical and overhead welding certification, participants will receive essential training in health and safety, working at heights, and confined space training. They’ll also have the chance to network with several labour unions, further enhancing their employability and readiness for the workforce.

“Preparing for entry into a trade means getting students interested—something we saw this week with students who are well prepared and keen to learn,” said Jason Elliott, CWB Group. “We see some great welders coming out of this Saugeen Sparks Centre ‘Ignite Your Future’ 2024 Project.”

“The Nuclear Innovation Institute is pleased to host these welding students at our NII Advance Technology Campus,” said Stellina Williams, NII Vice-President. “Their success is a shining example of what can be achieved right here at home—with dedication, quality training and a supportive learning environment.”

Congratulations to all CWB workshop graduates and good luck to the Tomorrow’s Trades participants!
