Innovation doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It takes place in busy offices, on hectic shop floors, and in the midst of everyday tasks. But between mountains of redundant paperwork, not having the right tools when you need them, and overly complicated processes, how do teams ever find the time to innovate?
The Nuclear Innovation Institute knows that a culture of continuous improvement supports a foundation for innovation: by focusing on continual process improvement, you create a solid foundation where big ideas can truly thrive.
NII has launched Kaizen for Nuclear, a program with the goal of fostering continuous improvement. We’re bringing together Bruce Power, NII’s Founding Members, and partner vendors from the nuclear supply chain to reimagine processes, boost efficiency and empower workers on every level.
Change for the better
At its core, Kaizen is associated with small, incremental improvements.
Says Mark Hamel, author of the Kaizen Event Fieldbook: Kaizen is the Japanese principle of continuous improvement—kai in Japanese means “change” and zen means “for the better.”
While the concept may seem simple, it holds a powerful promise: that even the smallest adjustments can lead to significant outcomes. The Kaizen approach encourages a mindset where employees consistently think about ways to improve their work, making it easier, safer and more efficient.
For companies mindful of regulatory requirements and safety protocols, the Kaizen-driven approach resonates well. Continuous improvement not only enhances safety and regulatory compliance but also enables Bruce Power and its partners to deliver better value to taxpayers by driving down costs.
Empowering employees to lead
Kaizen for Nuclear emphasizes one essential truth: workers on the frontlines have invaluable insights into how to improve their work. This program is designed to remove barriers, allowing these employees to actively contribute to the process improvement conversation.
Through Kaizen events, NII and Bruce Power are engaging frontline workers—the people who know their work best—in discussions and problem-solving sessions. This approach gives employees the authority to make changes and solve problems, ultimately fostering a workplace culture of collaboration and trust.
“Our workers have the best ideas in terms of making improvements to the work that they do every day. And so this is really about us removing a lot of those barriers that they continually tell us are a frustration and a barrier to all of our collective success.” --NII Board Chair James Scongack, Executive Vice-President & COO at Bruce Power
Why Kaizen matters for the future of Canadian nuclear
Canada’s nuclear industry is positioned for growth, with demand for large-scale nuclear technology on the rise globally. By committing to Kaizen principles, Bruce Power and NII are setting a high standard for efficiency and quality that will not only elevate their industry reputation but also contribute meaningfully to the Canadian economy. And through sharing successes and best practices with colleagues, national sector partners can learn from our leadership in this initiative.
As Maura McDonald, Vice-President Key Account & Stakeholder Management at NII Founder AtkinsRéalis describes, “Continuous improvement is imperative if we're going to remain a top-tier provider globally… when we all come together to deliver a better product, more efficiency, we all win together.”
It’s an exciting time Canada’s nuclear sector—and NII’s Founding Members will have a direct hand in driving innovation and reinforcing the country’s legacy in nuclear excellence.
